Sketches of Answers to Problem Sets

چکیده
(1) (a) Imagine that companies have some different costs of installing fax machines (perhaps because of different degrees of liquidity or access to credit) but that they all face a return from installing the machines that depends positively on how many other companies are installing. Then the graph that you draw will be upward-sloping. The more companies that are expected to install the machines, the more will actually do so. [Important: note that the intersections of this graph with the 450 line describes the equilibrium outcomes. Can you tell which intersections might be stable and which unstable, in the sense discussed in class?]

Set-Difference Range Queries
We introduce the problem of performing set-difference range queries, where answers to queries are set-theoretic symmetric differences between sets of items in two geometric ranges. We describe a general framework for answering such queries based on a novel use of datastreaming sketches we call signed symmetric-difference sketches. We show that such sketches can be realized using invertible Bloo...
متن کاملSketch-based Querying of Distributed Sliding-Window Data Streams
While traditional data-management systems focus on evaluating single, adhoc queries over static data sets in a centralized setting, several emerging applications require (possibly, continuous) answers to queries on dynamic data that is widely distributed and constantly updated. Furthermore, such query answers often need to discount data that is “stale”, and operate solely on a sliding window of...
متن کاملClustering Hand-Drawn Sketches via Analogical Generalization
One of the major challenges to building intelligent educational software is determining what kinds of feedback to give learners. Useful feedback makes use of models of domain-specific knowledge, especially models that are commonly held by potential students. To empirically determine what these models are, student data can be clustered to reveal common misconceptions or common problem-solving st...
متن کاملLinear Sketches for Approximate Aggregate Range Queries
Answering aggregate queries approximately over multidimensional data is an important problem that arises naturally in many applications. An approach to the problem is to maintain a succinct (i.e. O(k) space) representation, called sketch, of the frequency distribution h of the data, and use ĥ for answering queries. Common sketches are constructed via linear mappings of h onto a k–dimensional sp...
متن کاملContemporary Shifts in the Christian Doctrine of Hell in Anglo-American Philosophical Theology
This problem of hell is a specific form of the problem of evil. The possibility that perhaps a great number of people will end up in an eternal hell is a problem for the Christian who also confesses faith in an omnipotent, omniscient, and omnibenevolent God. In this paper, I shall introduce issuantist views of hell and show that the basic formulations of this perspective do not provide an adeq...
